RossTamlin - Biography

A Range of Contemporary Art for Sale in Sydney

Ross Tamlin is a corrugated signage art specialist from Australia. He was born in Herne Bay, Auckland Harbor, NZ in 1958. Creativity is in his genes. Ross’ father was very good at drawing, a talent he picked up from his mother. Ross’mother was a gifted opera singer although she did not pursue a professional career. Her mother had starred in the film Broken Barrier, the first major movie to be made in NZ since the end of WW2.

Ross Tamlin’s’ family then moved to a new subdivision on a peninsula in the western suburbs of Auckland. Life in the suburbs was going to school, lots of swimming in the holidays and developing a talent for drawing. He became engrossed in drawing everything and anything; copying anatomical drawings as he thought he might be a doctor and lots of boats and ships as his grandfather served in the Royal Navy and he would take him to see the visiting sailing ships. Being able to draw made him popular with the other pupils and put him in good stead with the teachers. Soon, he was winning art competitions and exhibiting in the school fetes and local junior exhibitions. At the age of 7 tragedy struck when his father died. Ross Tamlin’sworld changed forever, his childhood sense of security was gone but his one constant was being good at art which got him the grades to get his School Certificate and University Entrance.

Commencing a career in art and oil paintings

Leaving school Ross Tamlincommenced a part-time Town Planning course at the Auckland Technical Institute and worked in the chemical industry to pay his way. Eventually, he was offered a Town Planning cadetship at one of the Auckland county councils. Somehow it didn’t quite seem like him. He wanted to travel and see a bit more of the world so, in 1982 along with a bunch of friends he had grown up with, he moved to Sydney, Australia. Life was tough moving to a new country with very little money and he had to get a job quickly.

So it was another chemical industry job in paint manufacturing. Being young Ross Tamlin and his friends hung out at pubs and went to lots of music venues and for the first time in his life, he met artists sharing studios in Surry Hills and Darlinghurst which was a very new and exciting concept for him. After work, he would spend all his time drawing. Soon he had enough work to put a portfolio together, submitted it to Meadowbank TAFE and was accepted with an A pass into the Fine Arts course by the principal Jocelyn Maughan. He was lucky to have exceptionally good teachers including Ross Harvey who taught him painting.

Ross Tamlin was devastated when partway through the course, he was diagnosed with Thyroid cancer and had to leave Meadowbank. After hospitalization, he moved to Brisbane to be near his siblings. While he was in Brisbane, he completed a Graphic Arts course in Westend. Physically and emotionally recovered, he returned to Sydney 18 months later and had to rethink where he was heading and what he wanted to do. He was fortunate to get a job in the lab with the paint company where he previously worked. Not quite in the art world but one historically developed by artists. Ross Tamlinlearnt about paint, pigments, resins, oils and acrylics, color matching and paint making. The Fine Arts course at Meadowbank taught him a lot but he wanted a more contemporary, studio-based experience and in 1994 became a member of CASA artists’ studios in Rozelle. It was a truly inspiring environment with a great bunch of artists working at different levels, styles, and mediums. There were many discussions about art, we exchanged ideas and information and supported one another. It was wonderful being in an environment with other artists. Later, CASA transformed into a much larger studio space called 1+2 Artists studios with about 50 artists. During this time, he had been exhibiting in a number of small galleries and art shows and had won awards for drawing at the Bankstown show and first place in the traditional section of the Fishers Ghost at Campbelltown

Modern paintings for sale by artist Ross Tamlin

At 1+2,Ross Tamlindid enough work to have his first solo exhibition with some moderate success, and that was the beginning of actually selling his artwork and being taken up by commercial galleries. Surrealism interested him significantly in his quest to understand modern art. He wanted to combine the use of contemporary surrealism with hyper-realism to create his own signature style of painting. The shipping container paintings evolved from when his wife and he moved to the UK and took their car with all their possessions inside a container. He was intrigued by the idea of lives being encapsulated in those coloured steel boxes with their huge company logos painted on the sides of containers that traversed all parts of the world. The idea for the corrugated signage paintings developed from these images as did his paintings of the stacked containers aboard ships and at the docks.

Today, Ross Tamlin paints stunning contemporary oil paintings and artworks, all for sale here in his shop. Revered across Sydney, Australia and beyond, Tamlin will continue exploring the world through his art. To enquire about paintings, or commissioning work, feel free to reach out.
